Updating 0.3 to 0.4 on Nexus One

I got news today through twitter that 0.4 is out but I can’t seem to figure out how to update my Nexus One currently running 0.3 to 0.4. I have done the update through the Whispercore installed app but after it has downloaded the update, it would hang on reboot. Fortunately, removal and reinsertion of the battery allows me to go back to 0.3. I thought the problem may be due to my sdcard being encrypted so after backing up my data via adb pull, I turned off SDcard encryption. However, the same problem occurs. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Thanks much.

Hello, I’m trying to update my nexus from version 0.3 to 0.4, but unfortunately neither the automatic update and the bug fix provided here work. I have downloaded WhisperCore Recovery Imager for N1 but it cannot be installed on any of the windows versions I have (xp sp3, win7) because of the following error:

“To run this application, you first must install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework:

v4.0.30319"

Of course I installed it and tried different versions of it as well. Could you please help me solving this issue? I’m blocked on the 0.3 version of WhisperCore now!

Best, Gianni

We’ve tracked this down, and it only effects a percentage of WhisperCore users who originally installed 0.2 or 0.3 with the Windows installer. As the comments note, the symptoms are that after running the “WhisperCore Updater” tool, the phone will reboot into the upgrade screen, but then fail and display an exclamation point.

To fix this bug, users will have to download and run a small Windows installer:

Nexus One users can get this here.
Nexus S users can get this here.

After this is complete, please run the “WhisperCore Updater” tool as usual, and everything should upgrade smoothly. We apologize for the inconvenience, and really appreciate the help we received in tracking this bug down.

Hello. I was the original author of the posted question. Thanks for the quick responses. I went ahead and sent contents of my last_log file to info@whispersys.com. It looks like the culprit was a failed signature verification of /cache/whispercore-update2103462704.zip. My original theory behind the SDcard encryption was thinking the update file needed to be stored on the SDcard and in unencrypted form for it to be picked up and read on boot. But after reviewing the log, my theory didn’t hold water. Thanks again.

No joy on a Nexus S here, using the built in updater. On reboot, the progress bar gets to about 25% and then I get the Triangle with Exclamation Point on screen and it just sits there. Pulled the battery and tried again…same thing. My phone is bone stock except for WC 0.3. Please advise.

Edit: Should I try the full installer method, like when I originally installed WC 0.3 on the new phone?

We’ve identified the problem with the upgrade path for users who originally installed with the Windows installer, and should have a fix out soon. You probably don’t want to use the full installer, since it’ll reformat your entire device and clobber your data.

SD card encryption should not be a factor for the default upgrade path. Which screen hangs on reboot?

I’m also having issues issues with updating to 0.4 but on a Nexus S . In my case the unit will reboot and proceed to load the update and then stop and show an exclamation point in a triangle. Reboot is only possible by removing and replacing the battery in my case as well. I installed the 0.3 version on a phone that had been rooted and has clockwork mod recovery on it. Don’t know if that will make a difference or not.

If you’ve reflashed the recovery image with clockworkmod, that could be a problem. Do you have adb setup? If so, the output of:

adb shell
su
cat /cache/recovery/last_log

…would be very helpful. Thanks!

haven’t used clockwork since I installed Whispercore. I can still capture the log if you need though.
